My first butterfly of the Cress Beds and although I would have predicted a Brimstone it was, in fact, a Small Tortoiseshell.

Not much to report though still 4 Water Rails present on the beds and the female Blackcap and female Brambling in the garden. I won't believe it is spring until that little lot leaves.

A cold, bright and sunny morning with some warmth in the sun as the morning went on. 29 bird species including 2 Water Rails, 2 Great-spotted Woodpeckers and a Green Sandpiper plus a flypast of a pair of Canada Geese. The first of the Coltsfoot (feet?) are showing though not completely open whilst I was there. I wonder if the frogspawn will survive the frost?
It really must be spring as a Brimstone flew past the window as I was eating my lunchtime sandwich. Although the title suggests it was the first garden butterfly it was my first anywhere!

Yet another check round Ewelme and, again, 24 species seen but a very different 24 species compared to last time. First Green Sandpiper since January, 1st Blackcap and Long-tailed Tit since last November and 1st Treecreeper since August 2006. 2 Water Rails seen - it will be interesting to see when they decide to leave us.

A latrine discovered at the Watercress beds so at least one Water Vole has survived the winter and predation. On a more mundane level 24 species of birds identified with 2 Water Rails seen and Sparrowhawk, 2 Buzzards and several Red Kites soaring against the blue sky. I can hardly believe I wrote "mundane" in relation to Red Kites and Buzzards - how times change!

Farm Survey

Amazingly a dry and reasonably warm survey and what a difference it makes! A total of 33 species identified and 420 individual birds. Highlights included 11 Lapwing, Skylark, a flock of 60 Fieldfare and 20 Redwing, 22 Linnet and 11 Yellowhammer. Great to see so many "glowing" Yellowhammers spread around the hedgerows and, hopefully, planning their nesting activities. Very surprising that this was the first record of Nuthatch for the site as woodland borders a great deal of the site.

Last Winter Timed Tetrad Survey

A bit of a waste of time as it was my worst ever TTS. The weather was not exactly conducive but just 18 species and 196 individual birds was poor reward for 2 hours survey! Very little worthy of note but 13 Red Kites, a Sparrowhawk, 2 Buzzards, a Kestrel and 5 Skylark just about worth mentioning.
